Wuyishan Nature Museum

The Nature Museum is located in Sankou within the Wuyishan Nature Reserve. It was jointly invested in and constructed by the National Forestry Ministry and the Fujian Provincial Forestry Department in 1987, with a building area of 1,673 square meters. In February 1990, the design and construction of the exhibits began, and the museum officially opened to the public on December 18 of the same year, with an exhibition area of 1,300 square meters;

The Wuyishan Nature Museum aims to “condense and reproduce the natural landscape of the Wuyishan Nature Reserve.” Centered around the “forest ecosystem,” the museum uses satellite imagery, bas-reliefs, and three-dimensional panoramic paintings as display techniques, spread across three exhibition halls. The first hall, the Natural Environment Hall, showcases the historical evolution of the Wuyishan Reserve and its general conditions in geology, geomorphology, hydrology, meteorology, and vegetation through a combination of satellite images, bas-reliefs, color-lit photographs, physical specimens, and charts. The second hall, the Ecological Landscape Hall, uses panoramic paintings and three-dimensional displays to condense and recreate the ecological landscape of a typical mid-subtropical forest ecosystem in the Wuyishan Reserve. With the Huanggang Mountain — the first peak of Wuyi and featuring a distinct vertical plant zone spectrum — as a model, the hall is enhanced with bird calls, insect noises, and cicada sounds to depict the different sceneries of spring, summer, autumn, and winter in the reserve, offering visitors an immersive experience. The third hall, the Species Treasury Hall, breaks away from the traditional way of displaying animal and plant specimens by using abstract shelving and highlighting the quantity, quality, and posture of the specimens. High-quality amber specimens are also displayed.

In July 1994, during the 15th anniversary celebration of the reserve, an Achievements Hall was added to showcase the accomplishments of the Wuyishan Reserve over its first 15 years. In December 1998, during the preparation work for the World Heritage nomination, a Botanical Hall was added to display the rare plant species of the Wuyishan Reserve.
