Built with a 200-million-yuan investment, Wuyi Mountain’s 2015 newcomer makes its debut—featuring the world’s first waterfall theater

Wuyi Mountain in China boasts two water-themed shows. In addition to the widely known “Impression Dahongpao” directed by Zhang Yimou, which is a must-see local attraction, the newly launched “Impression Wuyishan · Dream of Springs” in April 2015 is also not to be missed.
Ms. Hu from Clearwater Grand Ceremony Tourism Culture, the operator of “Impression Wuyishan · Dream of Springs,” introduced the new show tailored for the opening of the high-speed railway. It tells the story of three fishermen who dock their bamboo rafts by the winding Nine Bend River and enter a dream that embarks them on a fantastical journey, highlighting the nine virtues of the Nine Bend River.
Led by a guide, it started drizzling gently upon arrival in Wuyi Mountain, and the fog grew thicker. When we reached the location of “Impression Wuyishan”—Wuyi Square in the Wuyi Mountain National Tourist Resort Area—it was, unsurprisingly, still lightly raining. The tour bus stop was some distance away from the theater. After crossing the spacious square, we finally took shelter at the ticket entrance. Though the weather wasn’t ideal, it was peak tourist season, and with the recent opening of the high-speed railway, there were still quite a few visitors coming to see this year’s newly launched “Impression Wuyishan · Dream of Springs.”
Ms. Hu said this is the world’s first waterfall theater. Not only is the stage part of the performance, but the roof, the air, and even the audience seats are all integrated into the show, with everything surrounded by water. “Impression Wuyishan · Dream of Springs” also incorporates nearly all types of water effects found globally. Experiencing it live offers an even more stunning and magnificent sensation.

The show “Impression Wuyishan · Dream of Springs” officially begins after guests have taken their seats at 8 PM. At night, three fishermen, exhausted from a long day of fishing, lose their way along the winding Nine Bend River. They plan to dock on the shore to find a place to spend the night but discover a mysterious spring and enter a fantastical dream...
In the dream, water continuously appears, dancing around as lights illuminate everywhere. Blue, red, yellow, green, purple, and pink lights shift with the storyline, closely following the tale of the nine virtues of the Nine Bend River—purity, beauty, strength, wisdom, abundance, wealth, eternity, harmony, and imagination. Enhanced by holographic projections and 3D decals, the narrative becomes even more vivid. Figures like Jiang Ziya fishing and a phoenix soaring out of the water appear, with ever-changing projections, automated fountains, and bursts of mist occasionally spraying from walkways nearby, making it all quite astonishing. Suddenly bursting fireworks further amplify the grandeur and magnificence of the performance.

After exploring the nine virtues of the Nine Bend River, the fishermen’s dreamlike journey comes to a joyful and vibrant conclusion. The audience feels as though they’ve walked alongside the protagonists along the Nine Bend River, sharing in the magical dreamlike voyage.
“Impression Wuyishan · Dream of Springs” was co-created by Clearwater Grand Ceremony Tourism Culture Co., Ltd. and ECA2. ECA2 is a top-tier event company from France that has participated in major events such as the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, the 2004 Athens Olympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the 2010 Shanghai Expo, and the Singapore multimedia show “Song of the Sea.” ECA2 handled the design, direction, and production of “Impression Wuyishan · Dream of Springs.” The entire theater cost 230 million RMB to build and can accommodate 2,380 spectators simultaneously. Aside from the seats, aisles, and roof being part of the stage, the theater’s highlight is the world’s largest 30-meter-high waterfall screen.
