Huanggang Mountain in Wuyi Mountain

Huanggang Mountain is the main peak of the Wuyi Mountain Range, located at the border between Wuyi City in Fujian Province and Yanshan County in Jiangxi Province. With an elevation of 2,158 meters, it is the highest peak in East China on the Chinese mainland. To its northwest lies the second highest peak of the Wuyi Mountain Range, Dushujian, and to its southwest is Xianglu Peak, the second highest peak in Fujian. National nature reserves have been established on both the southern and northern foothills of Huanggang Mountain: the Wuyishan National Nature Reserve in Fujian and the Wuyishan National Nature Reserve in Jiangxi. Huanggang Mountain features the most typical, largest in area, and best-preserved subtropical primary forest system at the same latitude in the world. As a result, the Wuyishan National Nature Reserve in Fujian was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 as part of the Wuyi Mountains.

Huanggang Mountain is a mountain straddling the provinces of Fujian and Jiangxi, with a boundary stone marking the provincial divide at its summit. The highest point, at 2,160.8 meters, lies within Jiangxi territory. It is approximately 40 kilometers from downtown Wuyishan City in Nanping and about 60 kilometers from Yanshan County in Shangrao. The mountain is commonly known as Huanggang (Yellow Ridge) Mountain because its slopes are covered with daylilies—commonly called daylily or golden needles—which bloom golden yellow in August and September. In 1979, the state designated the well-preserved forests around Huanggang Mountain as the Wuyishan Nature Reserve, making it one of the few remaining biodiversity oases at the same latitude on Earth, with immense value.

Huanggang Mountain features dramatic elevation changes. Within a small area of just over 500 square kilometers, the lowest elevation is 300 meters, while the highest reaches 2,160.8 meters, creating a vertical ecological belt spanning ten kilometers. At the mountain’s base are evergreen broad-leaved forests and scattered moso bamboo groves. As the altitude rises sharply, temperate species such as Huangshan pine and southern hemlock become more common, and the forest vegetation transitions from evergreen broad-leaved forest to mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest. Around 1,900 meters, the view opens up to vast coniferous forests dominated by southern hemlock and Huangshan pine. Higher up, near 2,000 meters, low-growing evergreen and deciduous trees form a mid-mountain dwarf forest belt. The gentle slopes at the summit host a mid-mountain meadow belt dominated by grasses. From low to high elevations, the five distinct forest vegetation belts reflect the vertical zonation of temperature, precipitation, and soil types at varying altitudes.

The scenic area spans a total of over 500 square kilometers and features attractions rich in legend, including Seven Star Mountain, Wangfu Mountain, Leigu Ridge, Fan’an Temple, and the Sword-Testing Stone. There are also red tourism sites such as the Dongkeng ruins and the Soviet-era site of the Wang family in Shilong Village. It remains one of the better-preserved and more pristine central subtropical forest landscapes in China, and boasts abundant water resources, forming a diverse and content-rich eco-tourism destination. It is hailed as the “Kingdom of Rare Plants and Paradise of Exotic Birds and Animals.”
