Hanging Coffins on Cliffs

The Hanging Coffins on Cliffs is a cultural tourism attraction.

At sites such as Dazang Peak, Baiyun Rock, and Dawang Peak in Wuyishan, ancient relics like hanging coffins on cliffs and rainbow bridge planks can still be found today. According to archaeological research, the so-called "hanging coffins on cliffs" are burial artifacts from the ancient Yue people who once lived in the Wuyi Mountain area — a type of unusually shaped coffin. These coffins come in two main forms: one with both ends raised like the bow and stern of a boat, and another square-shaped, resembling a box, commonly known as a "coffin box." The so-called "rainbow bridge planks" refer to the wooden planks used to support the hanging coffins or construct plank roads.

It remains a mystery how the ancestors of Wuyishan managed to hoist these coffins up to caves in the steep cliffs more than three thousand years ago, when productivity was extremely low.
