The hometown of Zhu Xi in Wuyi is located in Wuyi Town, in the southeastern part of Wuyishan City, at the junction of Pucheng, Jianyang, and Wuyishan counties (cities), 51 kilometers from the city center and 51 kilometers from the resort area. Wuyi Town boasts a beautiful natural environment, pleasant climate, and abundant local produce, including white lotus, chestnuts, bayberries, shiitake mushrooms, and snails.

Since ancient times, Wuyi Town has been known as the “Origin of Confucian Culture,” producing notable figures across generations. By the Song Dynasty, it had reached its peak, attracting a gathering of scholars and celebrities, with flourishing commerce, industry, civil service, and agriculture. Notable historical figures born here include the anti-Jin general Liu Ziyu, Wu Jie, and Wu Lin; the poetic saint Liu Yong and his “Three Outstanding Lius”; the “Five Sages of the Hu Family” from the Hu An Guo lineage; and Zhu Xi, the master of Neo-Confucianism, who studied under mentors in Wuyi—truly a convergence of great minds.

It is an important historic and cultural town, rich in heritage sites and an integral part of the Wuyishan Cultural Heritage. It is now designated as a provincial-level historic and cultural town. There are two main attractions: First is the former residence of Zhu Xi – Ziyang Tower, featuring a tall and exquisitely built academy gate, adorned with elaborate brick carvings of flowers, birds, and figures, creating a majestic and solemn atmosphere. Second is the Ancient Xingxian Street. The street consists of six blocks and stretches over 1,000 meters. It is lined with memorial archways, many bearing inscriptions handwritten by historical figures. Notable structures along the street include the Xingxian Academy, Zhu Xi’s Community Granary, Zhu Xi Lane, and the Five Sages’ Well.

Wuyi Town: Wuyi Town is located in the northeastern part of Wuyishan City, covering an area of 175.75 square kilometers. It borders Shipi in Pucheng to the east, Huitan in Jianyang to the south, Jiangkou in Jianyang to the west, and Shangmei Township in Wuyishan City to the north. Nestled among towering mountains, it includes Dongpan Gang to the east at an elevation of 1,162.5 meters; Bijia Mountain to the south at 1,028.8 meters; and Meilinggang to the north at 797.8 meters.

During the Song and Yuan dynasties, Wuyi Town was divided into Inner Wuyi Li and Outer Wuyi Li, a division that continued until the end of the Qing Dynasty.
