Longjing Mountain

Longjing Mountain is located 8 kilometers southeast of the Wuyi Mountain Nature Scenic Area and 12 kilometers north of downtown Wuyishan. The Longjing Mountain Fitness and Leisure Natural Ecological Reserve covers a protected area of over 2,000 acres, with an average elevation of more than 300 meters and a climate that is warm in winter and cool in summer. Within the reserve lies a rift valley formed during the Cretaceous geological period, stretching over 5,000 meters, and is home to 55 species of terrestrial vertebrate wildlife across 33 families, 20 orders, and 4 classes. The original broad-leaved forest coverage reaches 100%, with abundant ferns, fungi, and mosses. The valley remains lush with flowers and plants year-round, teeming with birds, and features rugged peaks and oddly shaped rocks. The natural ecology within the valley is well-balanced, with high levels of negative ions in the air, leading some researchers to call Longjing Mountain the “Green Lung.”

The scenic area is themed around “geographical feng shui culture,” with an average elevation of over 300 meters and a climate that is warm in winter and cool in summer, making it an ideal summer retreat. The terrain consists of a rift valley formed during the Cretaceous period, with steep cliffs and towering rocks on both sides of the canyon. The valley floor is rich in water sources, and the long-term scouring of the narrow riverbed has created multi-tiered waterfalls. The vegetation community is highly diverse, and the primitive ecological forest in the valley is well-preserved, featuring both broad-leaved and coniferous forests. There are 118 species of seed plants, including one species under national first-class protection, five under national second-class protection, two under provincial key protection, and 11 under both national and provincial protection.

Boasting well-preserved natural landscapes, the valley enjoys a warm winter and cool summer. Major attractions include the Prayer for Rain Hall, Qiankun Palm Divination, and the Prayer Water Well. The four sacred beasts of geographical feng shui—Azure Dragon, White Tiger, Vermilion Bird, and Black Tortoise (the Black Tortoise, also referred to as “Xuan Wu,” symbolizes the black turtle-snake, where “Wu” means turtle-snake; the Azure Dragon and White Tiger represent the 28 lunar mansions of the four directions. The dragon represents the seven mansions of the east: Horn, Neck, Root, Room, Heart, Tail, and Winnowing Basket, and the shapes of these constellations closely resemble a dragon, as can be inferred from their names—Horn is the dragon’s horn, Neck is the neck, Root is the base, Room is the shoulder and flank, Heart is the heart, Tail is the tail, and Winnowing Basket is the tail end. The Azure Dragon is in the east, the White Tiger in the west, the Vermilion Bird in the south, the Black Tortoise in the north, and yellow represents the central and principal color.) Other sights include the Yang Fish Eye Waterfall, the Earth Dragon Heart Cave once bestowed an eighth-rank official title by Emperor Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty, and the ritual altars used by generations of people to pray for blessings.

Historical records indicate that since the Song Dynasty, the Prayer for Rain Hall on Longjing Mountain has been a place where locals prayed to the gods for rain and blessings, becoming the most bustling and influential rain-prayer site in eastern Wuyi. Whenever drought struck, villagers from surrounding areas would flock to Longjing Mountain to pray for rain, creating a spectacular scene. To this day, the remnant water-divining square well used for rain prayers still remains.
