Taoyuan Valley

Taoyuan Valley is a relatively newly opened scenic area, and getting in isn’t easy. The road is so narrow that only one large bus can pass through at a time. If vehicles come from opposite directions, the drivers must skillfully find a spot to yield—otherwise, neither can move. It takes about an hour and a bit to drive from Wuyi Mountain Villa to Taoyuan Valley. The car is parked by the suspension bridge at Taoyuan Valley. It’s said that this iron cable bridge, standing 53 meters high and spanning 170 meters across the steep peaks and secluded valley, is the most precipitous suspension bridge in Fujian Province.

Taoyuan Valley is a loop-route scenic area, where gushing waterfalls tumble endlessly through the valley. Beyond the valley, these streams become the Tongmu Stream, the source of the Min River and the mother river of northern Fujian. Along the 2.6-kilometer mountain trail we walked, we saw beautifully shaped, lush plant communities—each with an informational sign detailing its profile. We heard the thunderous roar of waterfalls bursting from the mountain gullies and plunging down. We felt bursts of dust-free mist raining down on us.

At Taoyuan Pool in Taoyuan Valley, there is a section known as the “oxygen bar,” where the air contains 89,000 negative oxygen ions per cubic centimeter—meaning the bacterial content is zero. Here, people aren’t just breathing in oxygen, they’re taking deep gulps of sterile air, as if trying to purge all impurities from their bodies and cleanse their internal organs with this bacteria-free air.
