Liuxiang Stream

Originally named Dao Shui Keng, it is located at the northern foot of Tianxin Rock. Strangely enough, all the streams and creeks in the Wuyi Mountain Scenic Area flow from west to east, rushing toward the gorge mouth and converging into the Chongyang Stream. Yet this particular stream originates from the northern valley of Sanyang Peak, flows northwestward, and reverses its course back into the mountains—hence the name.

The banks of Dao Shui Keng are lined with steep dark rocks and crimson cliffs, covered in hanging vines, wild grasses, and interspersed with clusters of mountain orchids, stoneflag iris, and fragrant orchids. “Falling leaves float on the deep stream, fluttering petals chase the rushing current.” As you walk along, the murmuring stream is accompanied by drifting petals, while faint, delicate scents waft through the air from time to time. The Ming Dynasty poet Xu Huotong, enchanted by the place, could not bear to leave and thus renamed the stream “Liuxiang” (Flowing Fragrance). Further north along the stream lies the Qingliang Gorge. This gorge is flanked by towering cliffs that loom closely over the waterway. Looking up, you’ll see jagged rocks that seem ready to tumble down, leaving only a narrow slit through which sunlight streams in at noon. Water trickling down the cliffs forms droplets that quickly turn into glistening rivulets, falling into the stream with a pleasant tinkling sound.

Visiting in the peak of summer, sitting on the stone slabs by the stream, you’ll feel a cool breeze blowing and a refreshing chill in the air—it’s truly a haven of coolness. Not far out of Qingliang Gorge, you’ll see a dark mountain peak crowned with a large slab of rock leaning forward, resembling a farmer wearing a tilted straw hat. Legend says the rock slab flew here from afar, hence the peak is called “Feilai Peak” (Flying Rock Peak). Passing Feilai Peak, you’ll come face to face with the majestic Yuzhu Peak, which rises straight up from the earth like a pillar reaching the sky.
