Tianxin Yongle Chan Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Wuyishan City.

Tianxin Yongle Chan Temple, a renowned Buddhist temple nestled deep within Mount Wuyi. It was originally built as Shanzhong Yongle Nunnery. “Shanzhong” refers to its geographical location, as the famous temple is situated right at the center of the 120-square-li scenic area of Mount Wuyi, hence the name.

The temple’s architecture flourished during the Ming and Qing dynasties, when the central axis of the temple complex featured halls such as the Maitreya Hall, the Heavenly King Hall, the Mahavira Hall, the Guanyin Hall, the Dharma Hall, the storeroom, the dining hall, the meditation hall, the guest hall, and the pilgrim building, with three-story bell and drum towers and auxiliary halls on both sides. The main structures featured soaring upturned eaves and curved railings, majestic and grand; the smaller carvings were exquisitely crafted, remarkably delicate and beautiful. The Mahavira Hall, a double-eaved hip-and-gable roof structure, evokes an even stronger sense of the solemnity of the Buddhist realm. This grand and serene temple suffered multiple upheavals during the Cultural Revolution. After the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee, with the implementation of religious policies, the temple was restored.
