The Site of the Shangmei Uprising is a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Fujian Province and a classic destination on the red tourism route.

The Site of the Shangmei Uprising is located in Houli Village, Shangmei Township, Wuyishan City, dating back to the modern era.

In October 1928, farmers from Shangmei and Xiamei in Chong’an County (now Wuyishan City), under the leadership of Communist Party members such as Xu Lujun and Chen Geng, launched an armed uprising. Subsequently, “People’s Associations” were widely organized in rural areas to lead peasants in fighting local tyrants, breaking open granaries and distributing grain, thus advancing the revolutionary struggle in northern Fujian.

The former site of the command center that led the uprising features an earth-and-timber structure with a gable-and-hip roof, measuring 26 meters in width and 40 meters in depth. The main gate of the building remains in its original state, while the courtyard has been renovated.

In 1961, it was listed among the first group of provincial-level cultural heritage sites by the People’s Government of Fujian Province. In December 2016, it was included in the “National Directory of Red Tourism Attractions.”

Shangmei Township: Shangmei Township is located in the eastern part of Wuyishan City, bordered by Wutun Township to the north, Shipi Town of Pucheng County to the east, Wufu and Xingtian towns to the south, and Wuyi Subdistrict Office and Xinfeng Subdistrict Office to the west.

During the Song and Yuan dynasties, the area of Shangmei Township was divided between Shangmeili and Waiwufuli within Dongxiang. In the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty, it belonged to the township area of Kaiyaoxiang under Wufu. In the 25th year of the Republic of China (1936), it was part of Shuangmei Township; in the 32nd year (1943), the administrative regions of townships and baos were adjusted, merging Baishui and Shuangmei into Bamei Township.
