Huanji Building is a Fujian Provincial Cultural Heritage Site.

Huanji Building is a provincial-level cultural heritage site, located in Nanzhong Village, Hukeng Town, right in the middle of the Nanxi Tulou Cluster. One explanation for the name “Huanji” (环极楼), which translates to “Ring Around the Pole,” is that the North Star, also known as the Pole Star or Beichen, sits at the celestial north and faces the south, maintaining its position without shifting, thus regarded as the lord among the stars. A poem reads: “All waters flow eastward, no star fails to revolve around the north,” meaning all stars orbit around the North Star.

Huanji Building, meaning “the ultimate in auspiciousness.” The inner central ring of the building is an open courtyard, which is unique among the many circular tulou in Yongding. In the circular courtyard paved with blue bricks, there is a central point — if you stomp your feet hard or call out or sing loudly, you can hear a very distinct echo, similar to the Echo Wall at Beijing’s Temple of Heaven. But once you step away from this central spot, the echo immediately disappears, making it a unique feature among Yongding tulou.

Hukeng Town: Located in the southeastern part of Yongding, upstream of the Jin Feng Stream. It borders Guzhu Township, Gaotou Township, and Shuyang Township of Nanjing County to the east, Luxi Township of Pinghe County to the southeast, Daxi Township to the west, and is adjacent to Chen Dong Township to the north. Covering an area of 96.1 square kilometers, it is a renowned tulou tourism area, as well as a hub for overseas Chinese, Taiwan-related activities, border regions, and old revolutionary base areas. In 1993, the township was upgraded to a town, with the town government located in Hukeng Village, 38 kilometers from the county seat. In 2000, it had 16 village committees, 166 villager groups, 5,057 households, and 22,908 residents.
