The Former Residence of Mao Zedong is located at Yantan Ancestral Hall in Huxi Village, Hugang Town. It was the main ancestral hall of the Lai clan in Hugang, built in the early years of the Republic of China, covering an area of about 1,200 square meters. The structure is made of brick and wood, faces west with a eastward orientation, and consists of a single building with a front porch and two side wings. The central axis, from east to west, includes a pond, surrounding wall, courtyard, main hall, with side wings on the left and right. It features a hip-and-gable roof with purlins resting on gable walls. In early August 1929, Mao Zedong, accompanied by his wife He Zizhen and escorted by Su Yu, traveled from Dayangba, Shanghang, to Hugang. At that time, Mao convened discussions with local party and government officials and representatives of the masses, listened to their feedback, and learned about the revolutionary situation in Hugang. He pointed out the direction for revolution, emphasizing that the immediate task was to overthrow local tyrants, redistribute land, improve people's livelihoods, and gain public support in order to consolidate the red regime. Subsequently, a detachment of the First Column was stationed in Hugang to guide and support its revolutionary and developmental efforts. On December 15, 1930, after various party, government, military, judicial, economic, and cultural institutions such as the Western Fujian Special Committee of the CPC and the Western Fujian Soviet Government moved to Hugang, Mao returned and stayed at Yantan Ancestral Hall in Huxi. While guiding the work of the Western Fujian Special Committee and the Western Fujian Soviet Government, he also gave lectures at the Peng-Yang Military School and inspected the Red Army ordnance factory.
