The Site of the Pingzai Uprising (Pingzai Wugu Temple) is a cultural relic protection unit of Yongding District.

The Site of the Pingzai Uprising (Pingzai Wugu Temple) is located in Pingzai Village, Gaobei Town, dating back to 1928.

The Pingzai Wugu Temple, also known as the Xianong Temple, is located at the mouth of Wudongkeng in Pingzai Village, Gaobei Town, Yongding District. It covers an area of over 10 acres, with a built-up area of more than 800 square meters. The temple complex consists of a front hall, a central courtyard, side corridors, the main hall, and two rows of wing rooms on either side. Built in the 38th year of the Qianlong reign during the Qing Dynasty (1773), it features a palatial architectural style with a timber and earthen structure. The temple is dedicated to the Xianong God. The Xianong God, according to legend, is the God of Agriculture who blesses farmers with favorable weather and bountiful harvests—also known as Shennong, the Yan Emperor. In Beijing, there is the Xianong Altar where, at the start of each spring, the emperor would lead civil and military officials in worshiping the Xianong God. The Pingzai Wugu Temple is one of the very few Xianong Temples in western Fujian, and the only one in the Taiping Subdistrict of Yongding. In July 1928, more than twenty revolutionaries from Pingzai held the Pingzai Uprising here. On August 5, 1928, the Wugu Temple served as the gathering point for the Xibiling Uprising. A force of over 500 soldiers led by Fu Baicui arrived in Gaobei, where they joined local peasant militias from Gaobei and Hugang at the Wugu Temple before marching to Xibiling, sparking the Xibiling Uprising.

Protected Area: Extending 50 meters to the east up to vegetable fields and tea plantations, to the south up to fish ponds and paddy fields, to the west up to vegetable fields and tea plantations, and to the north up to the bamboo forest and orchard under the yellow bamboo trees in Huangzhukeng, extending 50 meters.

Construction Control Zone: An additional 50-meter buffer beyond the boundary of the protected area.

Pingzai Village: Pingzai Village in Gaobei Town is located in the eastern part of Gaobei Town, covering an area of approximately 9 square kilometers. It consists of 22 natural villages, 45 villager groups, with 1,851 households, a population of 5,270, 158 Party members, 45 village group leaders, and 12 village cadres (including 1 hired).

Since Pingzai Village was designated as a key site for land requisition and demolition in 2009, the village’s two committees and the general populace have actively responded to government calls, strongly supporting industrial development and project construction. The key North Road project also runs through various sections of the village. To date, 2,300 acres of land have been requisitioned, and one-third of the demolition has been completed.
