Nanzhao Wu Temple

The Nanzhao Wu Temple is a cultural heritage site protected at the county level in Zhao’an County.

The Wu Temple is situated on Ximen Street in Nanzhao Town and is a county-level cultural heritage site, commonly referred to as the Guan Yu Temple. It was constructed during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. Renovations were carried out in 1544, 1605, 1679, 1747, and 1902. The temple faces east and sits westward, with a depth of 26.7 meters and a width of 14.5 meters, and including the front plaza, covers an area of approximately 800 square meters. It consists of a gate tower, two side corridors, a worship pavilion, and a main hall. The main hall features a single-eave hanging gable roof and a post-and-lintel wooden frame structure, with a thirteen-rafter arched roof. The gate tower, lintels, and wall shoulders are all made of granite, while the beams and frames are entirely wooden. The golden pillars are all spindle-shaped stone columns; the circumference of the golden pillar in the central bay is 1.2 meters. The horizontal bracket sets (puzuo) in the central bay consist of two clusters, one cluster in the side bays, and the bracket arms (dougong) are of the one-dou-three-sheng style. The column bases are square, drum-mirror shaped. Ten stone steles recording renovations throughout various dynasties are preserved on the site.

It is recognized as the “Hometown of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Art” and the “Hometown of Chinese Folk Culture and Art,” and has been designated as a provincial-level “Civilized Town,” “Trade and Commerce Hub Town,” and “Ecological Township.” The town currently covers an area of 17.5 square kilometers, with a planned area of 36.7 square kilometers. It administers 15 communities and 2 administrative villages, with a total population of approximately 81,000. In 2015, the total rural economic income was 261.11 million yuan, and the per capita income of farmers was 14,000 yuan.
