Former Site of the Yunhezhao County Committee of the Communist Party of China

The former site of the Yunhezhao County Committee of the Communist Party of China is a cultural relic protection unit of Fujian Province and a classic red tourism destination.

The former site of the Yunhezhao County Committee of the Communist Party of China is located in Yuègǎng Village, Jiànshè Township, Zhao’an County, dating back to 1935–1937.

Description: Originally the main ancestral hall or branch ancestral temple of the Chen clan in Yuègǎng, it was built successively from the mid-to-late Qing Dynasty to the Republican era, consisting of five structures: Dàsān Ancestral Hall, Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Chen Clan Minor Ancestral Hall, Chéngdé Ancestral Hall, and Yùdé Ancestral Hall. From 1935 to July 1937, the headquarters of the Yunhezhao County Committee of the Communist Party of China was located here, serving also as an important base of operations for the Minyue Border Special Committee of the CPC and the Minyue Border Independent Battalion. On July 14, 1937, Zhang Min, acting secretary of the Minyue Border Special Committee, convened an expanded county committee meeting at Dàsān Ancestral Hall to convey the political agreement of the “June 26” Kuomintang–Communist cooperation and the spirit of the Special Committee’s meeting on “Kuomintang–Communist cooperation to jointly resist Japan.” On July 16, the Nationalist Zhao’an Security Battalion launched a surprise attack on Yuègǎng Village. Lóu Guìyán, a member of the county committee attending the meeting, was killed on the spot. Zhang Min, acting secretary of the Minyue Border Special Committee, Lǐ Cáiyán, secretary of the Yunhezhao County Committee, and 12 others were arrested. During their transfer, three people including Wú Lǎoshī were killed, and the rest were imprisoned in the county jail. On July 20, Zhang Min and 11 others were executed at Hǔyǎo Lane at the foot of Liángfēng Mountain on the outskirts of Zhao’an County. This tragic event, resulting from the Party being deceived by the Kuomintang’s false peace talks in the early stages of the War of Resistance Against Japan, is historically known as the “Yuègǎng Incident.”

In 2018, the former site of the Yunhezhao County Committee of the Communist Party of China was designated as part of the ninth batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units by the People’s Government of Fujian Province.

Protected area: Dàsān Ancestral Hall: 10 meters beyond the outer eaves drip line to the east, west, and north, and 10 meters beyond the ancestral hall screen wall to the south. Other buildings: 10 meters outward from the drip line around each structure.

Jiànshè Township: Jiànshè Township is located in the central-western part of Zhao’an County, 14 kilometers from the county seat. It borders Hóngxīng Township to the northeast, shares a boundary with Raoping County of Guangdong Province to the west, connects to Xítán and Báiyáng Townships to the south, and adjoins Tàipíng Town to the northwest. The township covers a total area of 60 square kilometers, comprising one state-owned farm (with five work areas) and eight administrative villages, with a population of 12,860. Jiànshè Township is a veteran revolutionary base area and is home to red tourism resources such as the “Yuègǎng Incident” Memorial Hall of Zhao’an County and the former site of the Cháochéng-Ráoyán-Píng County Committee.
