Nanzhao Dongyue Temple

Nanzhao Dongyue Temple is a cultural relic protection unit of Fujian Province.

Nanzhao Dongyue Temple is located on Liujie Street in Nanzhao Town, Zhao’an County, and dates back to the Qing Dynasty.

Introduction: Originally built in the 21st year of the Wanli reign during the Ming Dynasty (1593), the existing structure is from the Qing Dynasty. It faces east-northeast and is oriented west, consisting of a front hall, main hall, rear hall, as well as side corridors and pavilions, covering a construction area of 1,031 square meters. The main hall is five bays wide and three bays deep, featuring a post-and-lintel and through-tenon style beam frame, with a hip-and-gable roof. It retains a stone shrine pedestal inscribed with the date of the 21st year of the Wanli reign (1593), as well as five stone steles from the Qianlong and Daoguang reigns of the Qing Dynasty.

In 2013, Nanzhao Dongyue Temple was announced as part of the eighth batch of provincial-level cultural relic protection units by the People’s Government of Fujian Province.

Protected area: An additional 20 meters outward from all sides of the temple.

Nanzhao Town: Located in the southern part of Zhao’an County and bordering the Dongxi River to the east, Nanzhao Town is the economic, political, and cultural center of Zhao’an County. It is recognized as the “Hometown of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Art” and the “Hometown of Chinese Folk Culture and Arts,” as well as a provincial-level “Civilized Town,” “Key Commercial Town,” and “Ecological Township.” The town currently covers an area of 17.5 square kilometers, with a planned area of 36.7 square kilometers. It governs 15 communities and 2 administrative villages, with a total population of approximately 81,000. In 2015, the total rural economic income was 261.11 million yuan, and the per capita net income of farmers was 14,000 yuan.
