Earth Buildings Cluster (Hua’an Tulou)

The Earth Buildings Cluster is located in Dadi Village, Xiandu Town, in the eastern part of Hua’an County, 26 kilometers from the county seat. In 2005, it was home to “households and 306 people, all members of the Jiang clan, whose main livelihoods were farming and tea cultivation.

The village is surrounded by mountains on the east, west, and south sides, with farmland to the north. Two small streams run through the village and converge in front of the Er’yi Building before flowing into the river. Dadi Village still retains many tulou structures as well as other traditional earthen and wooden buildings. The tulou included in the nomination are the Er’yi Building, Nanyang Building, and Dongyang Building, all of which are well-preserved.

The location of the Earth Buildings Cluster reflects the principles of traditional Chinese “feng shui” architectural planning. The cluster backs onto Beishi Mountain and Yigong Mountain; faces the Dagui Mountain and overlooks the Jiulong Ridge, with peaks overlapping and lush greenery year-round; to the left, Shizi Mountain winds and leaps, marked by Damo Rock as its peak name; to the right, Jinmian Mountain and Huxing Mountain lie low together, with the resplendent Xuantian Pavilion nearby. The two streams converge in front of the Er’yi Building, winding in a shape like a jade belt. Its geographical layout is aptly described by the couplet at the ancestral hall of the Er’yi Building: “Relying on Beishi Mountain as a screen, four peaks embrace the profound pavilion; Facing Dagui Mountain as a case, two waters meander around the lofty building”; “Auspiciousness rings through Dadi and continues the prosperity of Qionglin opening six beauties, Joy overflows Er’yi and also faces Jiulong Mountain across Dagui.”

In November 1996, the Er’yi Building was announced as part of the fifth group of Major National Historical and Cultural Sites. In March 2000, the Dongyang Building was designated as a Hua’an County-level cultural relics protection unit. In May 2006, the Nanyang Building was listed as part of the sixth group of Major National Historical and Cultural Sites.
