Dongxi Kiln Site
Located at Dongxitou in Sanyang Village, Gao’an Town, Huian County, and at Fengmenkeng on the eastern bank of Dongxi in Xishan Village, Longshan Town, Nanjing County, the site has been included in China’s tentative list for World Cultural Heritage under the “Maritime Silk Road: Chinese Sites.” Among these, the Huian Dongxi Kiln Site is a large-scale folk porcelain kiln site dating from the mid-Ming Dynasty to the late Qing Dynasty. It was registered during the second national cultural relics survey in 1986 and was re-examined during the third national survey on August 6, 2009. The kiln site spans approximately 100,000 square meters, primarily concentrated around areas such as Saozhu Stone Mountain, Baiyeba Mountain, Mafankeng Mountain, Dongxi Weizi (Niuliao) Mountain, Dongxi Anzi, Diaogong Mountain, Bengpianhu Mountain, Xixing Mountain, Houkengliao Mountain, and Mupingyang, situated along the road between Gao’an and Nanjing. Nearly 20 kiln mouths have been discovered, along with substantial accumulations of layers. Many artifacts and fragments are considered by archaeologists to exhibit typical characteristics of Zhangzhou kilns and have been recognized by overseas collectors as renowned Chinese porcelain.
The three surveys unearthed a large number of fragments including blue-and-white porcelain, beige glaze, green glaze, soy sauce glaze, and polychrome glaze. This kiln site holds significant scientific value for studying the craftsmanship of porcelain production during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In ancient times, a substantial amount of local porcelain was transported from Yue Port and Xiamen Port to Taiwan, maintaining close commercial ties with Japan and Southeast Asia. As a heritage site related to Taiwan and overseas Chinese, it provides valuable references for researching Maritime Silk Road culture and the historical connections between Fujian and Taiwan. The Huian Dongxi Kiln employed advanced kiln-building technologies, with the transverse chamber stepped kiln being a masterpiece of the wisdom of master artisans from the region. These structures reveal the final developmental form of ancient dragon kilns in the Fujian area, and they also played a role in advancing Japanese kiln technology after the 18th century. The site offers important reference value for the study of the development and dissemination of ancient southern Chinese kiln technologies.
