Xiachang Granary Battle Site

The Xiachang Granary Battle Site is a classic red tourism attraction.

The Xiachang Granary Battle Site is located in Xialou She, Neizheng Group, Xiachang Village, Shajian Town, Hua’an County.

In May 1949, the troops of the 1st and 2nd Regiments under the 8th Detachment of the Eighth Route Army of the Minyuegan Border Region Column of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, led by Detachment Commander Li Zhongxian, Deputy Detachment Commander Wu Yang, and Deputy Political Commissar Lu Yan, after a series of battles in Gao’an, swiftly advanced toward Xiachang. By the time the troops arrived in Xiachang, it was already dark. Huang Yuding had gathered over 40 security troops to occupy the Xiachang Granary, using the sturdy building as cover to put up a desperate resistance against the PLA. Upon reaching Xiachang, the PLA launched a fierce attack. The cunning Huang Yuding, finding himself isolated and unsupported and realizing he could not hold out much longer, proposed negotiations with the attacking forces as a stalling tactic in an attempt to find an opportunity to escape. After assessing the enemy's movements, our army quickly saw through the ruse and intensified the offensive. The bandits resisted fiercely, but due to a lack of demolition equipment, the sturdy structure allowed them to prolong the battle until the early hours of the next morning. During the intense fighting, our army’s platoon leader Zhuang Zhoulu was wounded and sacrificed. As Xiachang was close to Zhangzhou, and upon learning that enemy reinforcements from Zhangzhou were on their way, our forces proactively withdrew from the battle and swiftly moved southward toward Nanjing. After the liberation of Hua’an, Huang Yuding—a leader of the militia turned bandit—hid in the mountains, and was eventually eliminated by the PLA.

Before liberation, the Xiachang Granary Battle Site served as a grain warehouse for the Nationalist government. After liberation, it was converted into residential housing. The building faces southeast and is situated northwest, covering a construction area of 1,200 square meters. It is a two-story earthen building with a brick-and-wood structure, consisting of 25 rooms. Currently, villagers have gradually moved into new homes, leaving the building unoccupied and neglected over the years.
