The Site of the Zhenfenglou Battle is a classic red tourism destination.

The Site of the Zhenfenglou Battle is located in Houqian, Gao’an Village, Gao’an Town, Hua’an County.

In May 1949, Li Zhongxian, commander of the 8th Detachment of the Minyuegan Border Column of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, along with his deputy commander Wu Yang and political commissar Lu Yan, led five companies from the 1st and 2nd Regiments. They were ordered to enter Hua’an to carry out operations, open up new fronts, and simultaneously prepare to join forces with the 4th Regiment from Anxi for military training. The troops set off from Jingdu in Nanjing, first took over the township government office of Guide (now Gao’an) under the Nationalist government in Hua’an, and then advanced directly toward the enemy-controlled grain depot at Zhenfenglou. A squad of militia soldiers defending the grain depot held out stubbornly from watchtowers at its four corners. Our forces suppressed the enemy with strong firepower, used artillery positioned on higher ground to target the enemy’s firing positions, and had soldiers throw homemade explosives into the building. Seizing the moment when the enemy was thrown into panic, our troops set up ladders and entered through the windows. Company Commander Lai Jingming led the soldiers in storming the building first. Under the fierce offensive, our army captured more than ten enemy soldiers and seized their weapons. The soldiers distributed the grain stored in the depot to the local poor and spread the Party’s policies and news about the progress of the Liberation War, achieving a second victory after entering Hua’an. The victory of the battle shook the ruling class of the Nationalist government and gave the people a glimpse of the approaching liberation.

The Site of the Zhenfenglou Battle was originally built in 1856 as the ancestral hall and residence of the Huang family in Gao’an. It was demolished and renovated in 2007 and now serves as the elderly activity center for Gao’an Village.
