Former Residence of Wu Yunlin
The former residence of Wu Yunlin is a classic site on China’s red tourism routes.
The former residence of Wu Yunlin is located in Dadi Village, Xiandu Town, Hua’an County.
Wu Yunlin, also known as Huang Delin, was born in 1901 in Xinzhai Village, Longgun Township, Wanning County, Hainan Province. After Chiang Kai-shek launched the April 12 Counterrevolutionary Coup in 1927, Wu Yunlin joined the Chinese Communist Party, holding positions such as member of the township Party branch, secretary of the township Communist Youth League branch, chairman of the Peasants’ Association, and commander of the Red Guards. In the autumn of 1929, when the Party organization in Hainan suffered severe suppression by the enemy, Wu Yunlin fled to Singapore. In 1931, he joined the Malayan Communist Party in Singapore, serving as leader of a party cell and chairman of an underground trade union, where he led local revolutionary struggles before being arrested and imprisoned by the British. He returned to China in June 1934 and was assigned to work in the southern Fujian guerrilla zone, serving as head of the transportation hub of the Min-Yue Border Special Committee. In July 1935, he became deputy director of the Special Committee’s Economic Committee, overseeing its logistical operations. To counter the enemy’s “encirclement and suppression” campaigns against the Soviet areas, Wu Yunlin was tasked with opening new revolutionary bases. He successively led the establishment of guerrilla strongholds such as Liangshan and Houdong, forming 16 Party branches and several Red Guard units. In 1937, he was transferred to serve as Party secretary of Wenfeng District in Pinghe, where he remained to carry on the revolutionary struggle during the War of Resistance. Following the “Nanwei Incident” in 1942, he was assigned by the Party to go into hiding in Dadi Village, Hua’an, to continue underground revolutionary activities. To facilitate his covert work, Wu Yunlin married a local widow, using the marriage as a cover to actively engage in revolutionary efforts. He organized 12 progressive youths, including Liu Jinxiang (then principal of Dadi Central Primary School), teacher Liu Xinmin, teacher Li Xishui from Shangyuan Primary School, and villager Li Haishui, to secretly conduct revolutionary work, extending their influence into Anxi County and establishing contact with the Anxi Party organization. He continued his revolutionary struggle in Hua’an for many years, persisting until the liberation. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, he served as district chief, became deputy county magistrate of Zhangpu County in 1954, retired in 1968, and passed away in April 1989 due to illness.
The former residence of Wu Yunlin covers an area of 350 square meters, faces west with its back to the east, and features a two-courtyard, five-bay, single-story earthen-and-timber structure with a square layout. It has connecting corridors at the front and rear, totaling 18 rooms. Due to long-term neglect, it is now uninhabited.
