History Museum of the 24th Air Force Aviation Division

The History Museum of the 24th Air Force Aviation Division serves as a patriotic education base.

The 24th Air Force Aviation Division was established in September 1951 in Zhengzhou, Henan. It was subsequently stationed in Xiangtang, Jiangxi; Gucheng, Hebei; and Zunhua, Hebei, before being relocated to Yangcun, Tianjin in 1993. The division participated in the Battle of Liberation of Yijiangshan Island and shot down three enemy aircraft of the U.S. and Chiang Kai-shek forces during air defense operations over China’s territory. It received personal recognition from Party and state leaders on multiple occasions. After being tasked with the air defense of the capital, it successfully carried out a range of missions including sampling during nuclear tests in the western region, disaster relief in the Tangshan earthquake, major military exercises, the National Day military parade in the capital, aerobatic flight performances at the Moscow Air Show, and air security for major international and domestic conferences and sporting events. It was commended numerous times by the Central Military Commission, military headquarters, and the Air Force.

In 2009, after the base upgraded its equipment to the domestically produced J-10 fighter jets, facilities within the camp were renovated and expanded. The new museum covers an area of 380 square meters and includes 13 exhibition areas: Founding Period of the Unit, Air Defense of the Territory, Capital Air Defense, Embarking on a New Journey, Comprehensive Development of the Unit, Friendly Exchanges, Deep Military-Civilian Bonds, Historical Monuments, Special Care, Shining Stars Among Generals, among others. Leveraging the unique advantages of the August 1st Air Demonstration Team of the Air Force, the museum offers a variety of distinctive, content-rich, and educational activities such as viewing static aircraft, visiting the demonstration team’s history museum, watching documentaries about the division, enjoying highlights of the team’s flight maneuvers, witnessing live flight performances, and touring the living quarters and training facilities of the guard unit. These experiences popularize aviation knowledge and showcase the strength of national defense technology in an entertaining and interactive way.

The history museum has hosted visits from primary and secondary schools, universities, relevant ministries, and groups of civilians, further expanding the base’s influence and audience reach. In particular, it has received government officials, senior military officers, and military attachés from over 30 countries around the world, enhancing international exchange in science education. The museum has received widespread acclaim and has helped elevate science education to a higher level.

The History Museum of the 24th Air Force Aviation Division is a national science education base and a Tianjin municipal science education base. In 1997, it was designated as a Tianjin Municipal Patriotic Education Base by the Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government.
