Tianjin Xianyu Huang Tomb

Tianjin Xianyu Huang Tomb is a cultural tourism attraction.

Introduction Situated east of Lancheng Village, Gaocun Township, Wuqing County, this is a medium-sized brick-chambered tomb. It comprises a passage, corridor, front chamber, middle chamber, rear chamber, and side chambers, with a total length of 14.7 meters. A stele titled "Stele of Xianyu Jun, Former Governor of Yanmen Commandery in the Han Dynasty" stands in front of the tomb. The tomb was looted long ago, and the stele was buried underground. It was found in 1972. In 1977, the tomb was excavated, yielding over 70 cultural relics. These include a bronze incense burner that opens and closes, a bone comb and bone hairpin found with a bronze mirror, a brown-glazed ceramic jar with four loops, and vibrantly colored lacquer ear cups. Among the burial objects were also early porcelain items rarely seen in northern China, such as a pottery granary tower standing 85 cm high and 86 cm wide, exquisitely crafted and recreating the grain storage scene from 2,000 years ago. The stele was erected in the eighth year of the Yanxi era during the Eastern Han Dynasty (165 AD). It is now housed in the Tianjin History Museum. The stele is wider at the top and narrower at the bottom, shaped like a "Gui" (a ceremonial jade tablet). The front features a vertical seal script inscription in the center reading "Stele of Xianyu Jun, Former Governor of Yanmen Commandery in the Han Dynasty." The calligraphy is simple yet vigorous, with angular strokes and a strong clerical script influence. Dragons and tigers are carved in thin lines on both sides. A vermilion-colored sparrow is depicted in thin lines on the reverse side of the top. There is a hole at the base of the top section. Both sides of the main body of the stele are inscribed with text, totaling 827 characters in clerical script. The characters are neatly structured and powerful, standing out uniquely among Han dynasty clerical scripts. Aside from nine characters that are worn and hard to discern, the rest are clear. The base of the stele is rectangular with chamfered corners. The entire stele stands 2.67 meters tall, with the main body being 0.83 meters wide and 0.12 meters thick. It is well preserved and is considered a rare treasure among Han dynasty steles, with high historical and documentary value.
