Pearl S. Buck's former residence is located in the eastern part of Dahe South Street in Suzhou City, with 18 existing rooms covering an area of about 300 square meters. The world-renowned cultural figure Pearl S. Buck was a famous American novelist. She was born on June 26, 1892, in West Virginia, USA, and just three months after her birth, she was placed in a cradle and crossed the ocean with her missionary parents. For the first 40 years of her life, except for four years spent attending university and earning her master's degree in the United States, she essentially lived in China. She first resided in Qingjiang in northern Jiangsu, and at the age of four, her family returned to Zhenjiang. After getting married, she lived in Suzhou with her husband (John Lossing Buck) for over four years. Pearl S. Buck was the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. The settings of the landlord estates and rural life in China depicted in her famous work, the "Good Earth" trilogy, were based on Suzhou. The "Good Earth" trilogy became widely known in the United States and was one of the first major works through which the United States and Western countries came to understand China. In introducing Eastern culture, Pearl S. Buck was hailed in Europe and America as being “comparable to Marco Polo.”
