Shushan Martyrs' Cemetery

Shushan Martyrs' Cemetery is a cultural tourism attraction, a classic red tourism destination, and a patriotic education base.

Shushan Martyrs' Cemetery is located at the eastern foot of Dashushan Mountain in the western suburban scenic area of Hefei, covering an area of approximately 180,000 square meters. It is the largest martyrs' cemetery in Anhui Province. In May 1990, it was approved by the State Council as a Key Martyrs' Memorial Building Protection Unit in China, and has since been listed as an Anhui Provincial Patriotic Education Base by both the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the People's Government of Anhui Province. Shushan Martyrs' Cemetery is also one of the tourist attractions in Hefei.

The predecessor of Shushan Martyrs' Cemetery was Anhui Provincial Martyrs' Park, which was established in 1955. In March 1976, to highlight its role in patriotic education, a section of the original Anhui Provincial Martyrs' Park was separated to form Hefei Shushan Martyrs' Cemetery. The cemetery now consists of the Anhui Revolutionary Martyrs' Deeds Exhibition Hall, Dashushan Revolutionary Cemetery, the Memorial Square, and the Martyrs' Monument.

The Anhui Revolutionary Martyrs' Memorial Hall has a construction area of 2,642 square meters and displays the glorious achievements of 190 representative martyrs from the province, spanning from the First and Second Revolutionary Civil Wars to the period of socialist construction. Among them are Comrade Chen Yannian, son of one of the important early leaders of the Chinese Communist Party, Comrade Xu Jishen, an outstanding general of the People's Army, Comrade Wang Buwen, the first Secretary of the Anhui Provincial Committee, proletarian revolutionaries Comrade Luo Binghui and Comrade Peng Xuefeng, and other revolutionary martyrs. The exhibition hall houses 450 paintings, handwritten notes by martyrs, calligraphy and paintings by famous individuals, inscriptions by leaders, as well as lists of martyrs from all counties and cities across the province.

Since its opening in 1981, Shushan Martyrs' Cemetery has received an average of 200,000 visitors annually, fully leveraging its role as a patriotic education base in inspiring and educating the public, achieving significant social impact.

On major memorial days, various social organizations, enterprises, schools, and military units stationed in Hefei come to hold commemorative activities to honor the great achievements of the martyrs.

After nearly 50 years of afforestation and greening on barren hills, Hefei Shushan Martyrs' Cemetery now presents a fresh and solemn appearance. It has long been the only site in Hefei dedicated to commemorating revolutionary martyrs and providing patriotic and revolutionary tradition education. For the people of Hefei, mentioning the martyrs' cemetery immediately brings to mind this specific area on the northwest side of Dashushan Mountain. The Shushan Martyrs' Cemetery is also within the scope of the "Hefei Dashushan Forest Tourism Scenic Area Plan" approved by the State Council.
