The Shuigaozhuang Agricultural Science and Technology Demonstration Park is situated in Shuigaozhuang Village, Xinkou Town, Xiqing District, Tianjin, approximately 20 kilometers from downtown Tianjin. As the core project of the planned 105-million-yuan Dongdi High-Standard Facility Vegetable Base, the first phase of the Shuigaozhuang Science and Technology Demonstration Park has already invested 36.8 million yuan to construct 20,000 square meters of high-standard intelligent greenhouses. According to the development plan for Shuigaozhuang as the core area of Tianjin’s five-square-kilometer urban modern agriculture demonstration zone, the modern intelligent greenhouses in the core area are taking shape. Key municipal, district, and town leaders have visited the site on multiple occasions to provide guidance. Most of the soilless indoor cultivation systems, vertical wall plantings, and fruit trees are now bearing fruit. Coupled with the existing thousand-mu orchard and thousand-mu fish ponds, the park offers recreational, fishing, and sightseeing zones for high-tech agricultural experiences, including fruit picking, an agricultural supermarket, and a children’s playground. These fun activities allow visitors to enjoy a natural rural green tourism experience in the suburbs, attracting a large number of tourists.

The park features 14 functional areas, including agricultural science and technology services, displays of new crop varieties and space-bred strains, medicinal and health vegetable species, dwarf off-season cultivation of northern fruit trees, organic cultivation models and rare varieties of fruit and vegetables, and substrate-based soilless cultivation models. It integrates tourism, leisure, and sightseeing to meet the needs of various visitors.

Currently, the intelligent greenhouses have planted dozens of southern fruit tree varieties, such as papaya, jackfruit, water apple, loquat, sterculia nobilis, sapodilla, lychee, and banana. Over 120 types of vegetable varieties have been introduced into the greenhouses. Through advanced cultivation methods such as substrate soilless cultivation and vertical hydroponics, the growth patterns of plants have been altered and their life cycles extended, thereby increasing both the yield and quality of fruits and vegetables. Recently, conventional sweet potato varieties from Guangdong, Henan, and other regions have been introduced. Using vertical hydroponic technology, the tubers will grow in the air. With the growth cycle extended to over a year, yields are expected to double. In addition, the park will showcase the cutting-edge technique of aeroponic potato tuber formation, which fills a domestic and international gap—enabling one planting and multiple harvests. Soilless cultivation helps prevent soil-borne pests and diseases, while vertical farming can double the yield per unit area, significantly improving land use efficiency and conserving resources. Hydroponic techniques include nutrient film technique (NFT), vertical pipe hydroponics, vertical wall cultivation, and columnar soilless cultivation. These novel, unique, and specialized growing methods not only boost vegetable yields and improve quality but also beautify the growing environment, producing fresh, pollution-free green vegetables that offer visitors a refreshing experience.
