Tianjin Yangliuqing New Year Painting Workshop
The Tianjin Yangliuqing New Year Painting Workshop is a national AA-level tourist attraction.
One of China’s three most famous folk New Year painting styles. It originated during the Chongzhen era of the Ming Dynasty and flourished in the Qing Dynasty. In the history of Chinese printmaking, Yangliuqing New Year paintings are known as the “Southern Peach (Taohuawu of Suzhou) and Northern Willow (Yangliuqing),” alongside the renowned Taohuawu New Year paintings of southern Suzhou. At that time, most villages in and around Yangliuqing Town in Xiqing District, Tianjin, were engaged in the production of New Year paintings, earning the saying, “Every household knows how to paint, and every home excels in art.”
Yangliuqing New Year paintings inherit the traditions of Song and Yuan dynasty painting, incorporating elements from Ming dynasty woodblock prints, arts and crafts, and theatrical stage design. They are created using a combination of woodblock printing and hand-coloring—first printing the outlines with woodblocks, then filling in the colors by hand—resulting in a unique style that combines the bold charm of woodblock art with the aesthetics of traditional Chinese painting. These paintings employ various techniques such as symbolism and realism, drawing inspiration from real life, folk customs, and historical stories. They are a beloved form of folk art that has gained international recognition.
Today, visitors to Yangliuqing Town can still see the New Year painting workshops. A visit here not only offers insight into the history of Yangliuqing New Year paintings but also allows you to observe the entire painting-making process up close.
