Former Site of Wuhu Notre-Dame Cathedral

The former site of Wuhu Notre-Dame Cathedral is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

The former site of Wuhu Notre-Dame Cathedral is located within the First People’s Hospital at No. 65 North Jihé Road, Jinghu District, Wuhu City.

Designed and supervised by Spanish architects in 1933, it is one of the larger surviving church buildings in Wuhu. The Notre-Dame Cathedral was founded by the Wuhu Catholic Church and constructed under Spanish design and supervision in 1933, making it one of the larger surviving church buildings in the city today. There are two main structures: the western building is the convent, together with the eastern presbytery forming what is collectively known as the “Notre-Dame Cathedral.” The architecture features an arcade style, with a floor plan resembling a horizontal “工” character, symmetrically arranged along the east-west axis, and the central building protruding outward to the south. The structure spans 77.47 meters in width and 32.75 meters in depth, including a mezzanine level, totaling four floors with a total floor area of 4,217.36 square meters. The bishop’s building also has an arcade-style design with two floors and a raised ground floor; it measures 27.85 meters in width and 15.78 meters in depth, with a total floor area of 1,611.90 square meters.

The former site of the Notre-Dame Cathedral serves as physical historical evidence for studying Wuhu’s modern history within a specific cultural context. It represents a successful implementation of Western architectural style in China and holds significant scientific and artistic value in terms of structural design and construction craftsmanship.
