Former Residence of Xu Chengyao

The former residence of Xu Chengyao is a cultural heritage protection unit of Anhui Province.

The former residence of Xu Chengyao is located in Tangmo Village, Qiankou Town, Huizhou District, Huangshan City, and dates back to the Qing Dynasty.

In 2019, the former residence of Xu Chengyao was designated as part of the eighth batch of Provincial-Level Cultural Heritage Protection Units by the People’s Government of Anhui Province.

Xu Chengyao (1874–1946), courtesy name Jitang, art name Yian, and later known as Tunshou, was a native of Tangmo, She County. After passing the imperial examination at the age of 21, he studied under Wang Zongyi. In the 30th year of the Guangxu reign (1904), he became a Jinshi (successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations) and was appointed as a Shujishi (a junior compiler in the Hanlin Academy). The following year, he returned to She County and founded Xin’an Middle School and Ziyang Normal School, serving as their supervisor. He also assisted his grandfather in establishing Jingzong Primary School and Duanze Girls’ School in Tangmo, pioneering new education in She County, Huizhou. Tangmo Village: Tangmo Village is situated at the southern entrance to Mount Huang. The name “Tangmo” has been used for over 1,400 years and represents a settlement that has been refined over multiple dynasties since the Tang Dynasty—an embodiment of ancient Huizhou culture, carrying an air of history and rural charm.
