Medog, the Hidden Realm of the Lotus
“If you weren’t wise in a past life, you were born in Huizhou; by thirteen or fourteen, you’re sent away.” Ancient southern Anhui was known as Huizhou, bordered by Huangshan Mountain to the north and Tianmu Mountain to the south. Due to scarce local resources, its people have sought opportunities beyond their homeland since the Song Dynasty. Generation after generation of Huizhou residents forged arduous trade routes by transporting salt, tea, and mountain goods.
The Huizhou-Hangzhou Ancient Trail is one of them. Located on the northern side of the Qingliang Peak National Nature Reserve at the border between Anhui and Zhejiang provinces, it was an important historical route for Huizhou merchants traveling to Zhejiang—nearly 100 kilometers shorter than the detour via Yuping Pass. Starting from Xiaoyao Township in Jixi County, southern Anhui, it passes through Yaoyao Ridge, Matou Ridge, and Xuetang Ridge, ending at Maxiao Township in Lin’an District, western Zhejiang, spanning over 40 li. The trail features steep mountains, rugged rocks, towering peaks, and cliffs on both sides, with the meandering Xiaoyao Stream running through the valley.
