Danxia Peak

Danxia Peak is located in the West Sea Scenic Area of Huangshan, to the northeast of Shichuang Peak, along the route from Shigu Peak to Xihai Gate. It is one of the 36 major peaks, standing at an elevation of 1,664 meters. Its cliff walls are of a reddish hue, and when illuminated by the sunset glow, they display a dazzling array of colors—hence the name "Danxia."

Beneath the peak lies the Hongshui Spring, whose waters flow into the Danxia Stream. When the sunset glow reflects on the flowing stream, the scene becomes exceptionally brilliant and full of charm. In front of the peak stands the rock formation known as "Bodhidharma Facing the Wall," while to the east there is "White Horse Carrying Scriptures." Both rocks are strikingly lifelike and amusing in appearance. Huang Yuanzhi, a native of Yi County in the Qing Dynasty who once served as the magistrate of Hujiang in Yunnan, wrote a poem about it: “Among the peaks, this one stands uniquely towering; beyond the terrace, the sunset glow reflects the evening brightness. The summit soars into the sky without support, the heart cradles only purity as it faces the void. Guarding the elixir cauldron left by the Yellow Emperor, it resembles the Red City built on Tiantai Mountain. How wonderful it would be if such beauty could remain forever, with even more of the immortal’s dew shining clear.”

Two new winding trails have been opened from Paiyun Pavilion to Danxia Peak, allowing visitors to climb to the summit. From there, one can enjoy both sunrise and sunset views. Standing atop the peak, you can take in a panoramic view of Lion Peak to the north, Nine-Dragon Peak and Cloud-Outside Peak to the west, Furong Peak to the northwest, and the peaks of the West Sea to the southwest.
