Huangshan Yuping Scenic Area

The Huangshan Yuping Scenic Area centers around Yuping Tower, with Lotus Peak and Tiandu Peak as its main features. What people commonly refer to as the "front mountain" of Huangshan typically refers to this scenic area. Along the way, you’ll encounter marvelous sights such as the "Three Islands of Penglai," "Hundred Step Cloud Ladder," "One-Line Sky," "New One-Line Sky," and "Turtle Fish Cave."

Yuping Tower is nestled between Tiandu and Lotus Peaks, where almost all of Huangshan’s most spectacular views are concentrated, hence its reputation as the finest spot in Huangshan. The world-renowned Welcoming Guest Pine stands proudly to the left of Yuping Tower, while the Farewell Guest Pine stands to the right. In front of the tower are the Companion Guest Pine and the Wenshu Platform, and behind it lies Yuping Peak, on top of which sits the famous "Yuping Reclining Buddha." With its head to the left and feet to the right, the sculpture is remarkably lifelike. Inscribed on the rocks of the peak is Mao Zedong’s calligraphy in cursive script “0.” On the eastern stone wall of the tower, there are the words “Scenery Like a Painting” inscribed by Marshal [Name] and the poem “Touring Huangshan with Anti-Japanese Veterans in Southern Anhui” written by Marshal [Name]: “The anti-Japanese troops once marched northward, longing for rain during a great drought. Since ancient times, Huangshan has been shrouded in cloud seas; from now on, clouds and rain shall abound.”

Tiandu Peak is located one kilometer south of Yuping Peak and is the most precipitous among Huangshan’s three main peaks, standing at an elevation of 1,830 meters. An ancient poem praises it: “Let those who have visited China’s Five Sacred Mountains come here, and they too will marvel at Tiandu.” The path to the summit of Tiandu is extremely steep. In recent years, thanks to the continuous efforts of developers, the climb has become thrilling yet safe. At the top of Tiandu Peak, there is an inscription that reads “Reaching the Ultimate Height,” giving visitors the feeling that “where the sea ends, the sky becomes the shore, and when you stand atop the highest mountain, you are the peak.”

Lotus Peak, located north of Yuping Tower, is the highest peak in Huangshan, with an elevation of 1,864.8 meters. Towering and majestic, its shape resembles a lotus flower just beginning to bloom—hence its name. The journey from Lotus Ridge to the summit of Lotus Peak spans approximately 1.5 kilometers and is known as the Lotus Stem. Along the way, you’ll find famous Huangshan pines such as the Flying Dragon Pine and the Upside-Down Pine, as well as Huangshan azaleas. The summit of Lotus Peak spans about a square meter, with the fragrant Sand Well located in the center. Standing atop the peak and looking out in all directions, you’ll see a multitude of peaks competing in beauty and valleys veiled in mist. On clear days, you can gaze east to Tianmu Mountain, west to Mount Lu, and north to Jiuhua Mountain. After rain, the sea of clouds surrounding the peak in all eight directions is even more spectacular.

Descending from Lotus Peak, after passing the Turtle and Snake Rocks and the Hundred Step Cloud Ladder, and going through the Turtle Fish Cave, you’ll arrive at Turtle Fish Peak. This peak stands 1,780 meters tall and is named for its shape—the massive, lofty whale-like head gives the impression of a whale about to swallow the heavens and earth. Descending from Turtle Fish Peak leads you to the Heavenly Sea. Located amid Huangshan’s Front Sea, Back Sea, East Sea, and West Sea, the Heavenly Sea lies at the very center of Huangshan. Within this high-altitude basin at 1,750 meters, numerous rare plant species from both China and abroad thrive. The Huangshan gardening authorities have taken advantage of the unique climate conditions here to establish the Heavenly Sea Alpine Botanical Garden. Nearby attractions include the Sea Heart Pavilion and the Phoenix Pine.
