Huangshan North Sea Scenic Area

Huangshan North Sea Scenic Area is the heartland of the Huangshan scenic area, situated between Bright Summit, Shixin Peak, Lion Peak, and White Goose Peak. It connects to the Cloud Valley Scenic Area to the east, borders the Jade Screen Scenic Area to the south, and lies near the Songgu Scenic Area to the north. This is an expansive high-altitude mountainous area at about 1,600 meters above sea level, covering 1,316 hectares. The North Sea Scenic Area features peaks as its main landscape, showcasing a collection of peaks, rocks, ridges, valleys, terraces, as well as the unique wonders of pines and clouds. It is characterized by grandeur, peculiarity, danger, and illusion. The marvelous layout of nature and the ever-changing colors of the light create a series of breathtaking, majestic, mystical, and perilous natural masterpieces, making it a scenic window of Huangshan. Lion Peak, Qingliang Terrace, Monkey Gazing at the Sea, Immortal Carrying a Treasure, Dream Pen Blooming into a Flower, Flying Over Stone, and the Eighteen Arhats Facing South Sea captivate visitors. The North Sea is home to a gathering of peaks: Shimen Peak and Gongyang Mountain, both over 1,800 meters in elevation, stand like barriers separating the north and south. Lion Peak, standing 1,690 meters above sea level, stretches horizontally from east to west across the scenic area. Although not as high as Tiandu Peak or Lotus Peak, nor among the 36 major peaks, Shixin Peak dominates a perilous ravine, rising steeply with cliffs a thousand feet high on three sides. The small but spectacular summit offers panoramic views in all directions, earning the ancient praise “Huangshan’s majesty reigns supreme under heaven, while its serenity and beauty are gathered in the Back Sea,” and the famous saying “Only here do you truly believe in the wonder of Huangshan.” Qingliang Terrace on Lion Peak is the best spot to view the sea of clouds and watch the sunrise.

The North Sea is the main high-mountain scenic area and tourist reception hub of Huangshan, centered around Beihai Hotel. There are four traditional routes to climb Huangshan: the southern route from Hot Springs via Ciguang Pavilion, Jade Screen Tower, and Tiandihai to the North Sea (where the Jade Screen Cableway is built); the western route from Jiaocun via Diaqiao and Tiandihai to the North Sea; the eastern route from Kuzhu Stream via Cloud Valley Temple to Bai’e Ridge and the North Sea (where the Cloud Valley Cableway is built); and the northern route from Furong Ridge via Songgu Hermitage and the Eighteen Bends up to the North Sea (where the Taiping Cableway is built). The North Sea is located at the center of Huangshan, with all four main trails leading to it. Additionally, a network of smaller walking paths connects it to various scenic spots, naturally making it a convergence point for visitors.
