Paiyun Pavilion

A one-kilometer walk north from the Flying-over Stone will bring you to Paiyun Pavilion. Located at Xihai Gate, the pavilion was built in the 24th year of the Republic of China (1935). With its broad views, it is one of the best spots to admire Huangshan’s uniquely shaped rocks and scenic wonders. The pavilion earned the name “Paiyun” (Cloud Dispelling) because clouds often rise and churn in the valleys of the West Sea but dissipate just before reaching the stone structure.

Paiyun Pavilion is located at Xihai Gate in the Huangshan Scenic Area and was built in the 24th year of the Republic of China (1935).

(1935). It is a long, rectangular scenic pavilion constructed with granite slabs. The stone lintel is inscribed with the three characters “排云亭” (Paiyun Ting). The pavilion is 4 meters deep, 5 meters wide, 5 meters tall, and covers an area of 20 square meters.

Overview of the Attraction

In front of the pavilion is a platform of about 70 square meters, equipped with stone railings and iron chains where visitors can lean over and take in the spectacular views of the West Sea. Facing the grand peaks and valleys, the spot offers one of the most expansive vistas and is among the best places to appreciate Huangshan’s beauty.

　Standing at Paiyun Pavilion, visitors can see layers of peaks resembling a forest of arrows. When shrouded in mist, these peaks appear and disappear intermittently, looking like countless islands in the ocean.

Up close, not far to the left, there is a uniquely shaped rock that looks like an ancient man’s boot hanging upside down on a cliff — hence the name “Immortal Drying His Boot.” To the right, in the valley, stands a stone pillar with two other peculiar rocks resembling a pair of embroidered shoes worn by ancient ladies, known as “Immortal Drying Her Shoes.” The boot on the left and the shoes on the right correspond to each other from afar, truly a masterpiece of nature. There are many other named uniquely shaped rocks nearby, such as “Fairy Embroidering,” “Fairy Playing the Zither,” “Heavenly Dog Listening to the Zither,” “Immortal Walking on Stilts,” “Wu Song Fighting the Tiger,” and more. In front of Paiyun Pavilion, towering cliffs rise for thousands of feet amid swirling clouds, making it an ideal place to enjoy sea of clouds, sunset glows, and the serene beauty of peaks and valleys.

Locks of Love in Front of Paiyun Pavilion (15 photos) To accommodate visitors, the Huangshan management authorities have built a two-star sightseeing hotel — Paiyunlou Hotel — not far from Paiyun Pavilion at the foot of Danxia Peak, offering a place for tourists to stay and enjoy the scenery.
