Yuping Tower

Yuping Tower, located between Tiandu Peak and Lotus Peak, is an exceptional spot that showcases the finest wonders of Huangshan. The famous Guest-Greeting Pine stands to the left of Yuping Tower. Behind the tower lies Yuping Peak, where the renowned "Reclining Buddha of Yuping" is found atop the peak, facing left with its head and right with its feet, remarkably lifelike. The rocks of the peak are inscribed with Mao Zedong’s cursive script “0”. -,- and other marshals have also composed poems and inscriptions here. Xu Xiake once called it the “most splendid spot in Huangshan.”

To the left of Yuping Tower stands the Lion Stone, and to the right the Elephant Stone—both resembling gate guards. In front is the Guest-Greeting Pine, and behind is the Farewell Pine, welcoming and seeing off visitors with delightful postures. This is the best place to view the sea of clouds in the Front Sea. On clear days, you can also see nearby peculiar rock formations such as “Immortals Sailing on the Sea,” “A Sheep Crossing the River,” “A Golden Turtle Gazing at the Moon,” “A Squirrel Jumping Over Tiandu,” and “A Peacock Playing with Lotus,” truly a charming and picturesque scene.

On the way from the Hot Springs to Yuping Tower, there are numerous attractions in succession, presenting a grand sight: Miaomiao Pavilion, Lima Bridge, Wolong Gully, One-Line Sky, Upside-Down Pine, and Yuping Tower in the snow.

Other sights include Wenshu Cave and more, all forming a magnificent panorama. By Lima Bridge, there is a large stone inscription that reads “A Horse Stands Still, Emptying the East Sea, Ascending High to View Peace.” In front of Banshan Temple, you can see wonders such as “A Golden Rooster Crowing at the Heavenly Gate” and “An Eagle Catching a Chicken.” When you climb to Lianrui Peak and look back, “A Golden Rooster Crowing at the Heavenly Gate” remarkably transforms into “Five Elders Ascending to Tiandu.” After passing Xiaoxin Slope, there are three small peaks with towering pines, known as the “Three Penglai Islands.”

Tourist Highlights

The site of Yuping Tower is an exceptional spot that showcases the finest wonders of Huangshan. The Ming Dynasty traveler Xu Xiake visited here and was filled with admiration.

In front of Yuping Peak lies a huge rock platform called Wenshu Platform, which is an excellent vantage point for viewing the sea of clouds in the West Sea. To the left are the Green Lion Rock and the Guest-Greeting Pine; to the right are the White Elephant Rock, the Farewell Pine, and the Lixue Platform. From the platform, the views in all directions are extraordinarily spectacular.

Yuping Tower is situated between Tiandu Peak and Lotus Peak, with Yuping Peak right behind it. The tower is 36 meters away from the peak’s summit. During the Ming Dynasty, Monk Pumen built Wenshu Temple on the peak for the bodhisattva Manjushri. Today, the former site of the temple houses the Yuping Tower Hotel.

The Guest-Greeting Pine stands to the left of Yuping Tower, while the famous “Reclining Buddha of Yuping” is on the peak, facing left with its head and right with its feet, incredibly lifelike. The rocks of the peak are inscribed with Mao Zedong’s cursive script “0.”

To reach Yuping Tower, head to the central-western part of Huangshan and take the cable car to the Yuping Cableway Upper Station. The Yuping Cableway costs 80 RMB per person per trip (peak season) and 65 RMB per person per trip.
