Yungu Temple

Yungu Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.

Introduction Located in the eastern part of Huangshan Scenic Area, between Luohan Peak and Xianglu Peak, at an altitude of 890 meters. During the Ming Dynasty’s Wanli era, the Zhiba Chan Monastery was built here, and it was renamed Yungu Temple during the Chongzhen era. Cheng Yuanfeng, the Right Prime Minister of the Southern Song Dynasty, once studied here, hence it was also called Prime Minister’s Spring. The Ming literati Fu Yan wandered here and, at the request of the monks of Zhiba Chan, inscribed the two characters “Yun Gu” (Cloud Valley), after which the monastery was renamed “Yungu Temple.” Over time, Yungu Temple became the name of the place itself. The area features overlapping mountain ranges, winding valleys, and swirling clouds. The temple is surrounded by peaks, with bamboo forests like seas, pines and queer rocks, yellow firs, and tea trees — all picturesque. Along the road and stream at the southern entrance, stone carvings stand densely like a forest. In front of the temple lies Lingxi Spring, and in the woods nearby are two ancient and famous trees: one is an alien-root pine, the other a hemlock fir. The temple no longer exists, but a hotel has been built on its former site. Hikers ascending via the eastern route can rest here, gaze at the ever-changing cloud and mist scenery, and taste the famed Huangshan Maofeng tea. In recent years, a cable car has been constructed here, along with the “Yungu Mountain Villa” hotel. Surrounded by lush pines and bamboos, sights such as the thousand-year-old ginkgo tree, alien-root pines, the Lion Seizing the Ball rock formation, the Ancient Stone, Immortal Plaque, and Lingxi Spring, along with peaks like Bowl, Eyebrow, Luohan, and Xianglu, plus the Yungu Mountain Villa that embodies the essence of Huizhou architecture, all blend together to form an exceptionally tranquil environment.
