Wulong Pavilion

Introduction Wulong Pavilion is situated on a massive rock below Wulong Pool in the Songgu An area of Huangshan Mountain. It is a small yet exquisite four-cornered pavilion constructed before the liberation. On the two eastern stone pillars of the pavilion, there is an inscription of a couplet that reflects the religious doctrine: “Loyalty, forgiveness, integrity, clarity, virtue, righteousness, faith, endurance, fairness; benevolence, filial piety, kindness, compassion, enlightenment, frugality, truth, courtesy, and harmony.” This couplet contains 20 characters — “20” is referred to as “廿” (niàn) in Chinese — hence the pavilion is also known as the “Twenty-Character Pavilion.” Nestled against the mountain and beside the water, the pavilion is surrounded by beautiful and serene scenery, which becomes even more tranquil and enchanting under the moonlight. Inscribed on the two front stone pillars of the pavilion is another couplet: “Clouds and mountains surround on all sides, two waters flow nearby; a pool reflects stars and the moon above the pavilion,” which vividly captures the essence of the surrounding landscape. Due to this poetic description, the pavilion is also called the “Star-Moon Pavilion.” Additionally, because it is built near Wulong Pool, some texts refer to it as “Wulong Pavilion.” From this pavilion, visitors can overlook the scenic beauty of Wulong Pool.
