Immortal Drying His Boots

Introduction Near the left side of the Paiyun Pavilion in the West Sea Scenic Area, atop a peak, there is a rock resembling an ancient boot placed upside down on a stone platform, known as “Immortal Drying His Boots.” Legend has it that during ancient times, one of the Eight Immortals, Iron-Crutch Li, was passing through this area when he was captivated by the stunning scenery. A boot he had tucked under his arm fell off without him noticing. After he left, the boot remained there for years, drying in the sun, eventually turning to stone and becoming a uniquely charming scenic sight. A contemporary poet wrote: “In ancient days, the goddess failed to mend the sky; Huangshan saw endless rain all day. The immortal has gone, yet a wonder stays — an age-old boot dried in the sun for years.”
