Renzi Waterfall

Originally named “Flying Rain Come,” it is located between Zishi Peak and Zhusha Peak beside the hot springs at an altitude of 660 meters. With a single source splitting into two streams, its shape resembles the Chinese character “人” (human), hence the name. It is also called “Twin Dragons Waterfall” due to its resemblance to two white dragons cascading down. As it stands behind the towering Tiandu Peak that seems to touch the sun, it is also referred to as “Tiandu Waterfall.”

Overhanging crags tower hundreds of feet high, with rocks jutting from their middles. Nestled between Zishi and Zhusha Peaks beside the hot springs, the waterfall originates from a single source that splits into two streams, forming the shape of a “人” character. The waterfall is 50 meters long. During heavy rainy seasons, the water volume surges dramatically, making this giant “人” shape robust and powerful, much like the regular script of Yan Lugong. In times of drought with little water, the falls become slender and faint, light and ethereal, resembling Li Yangbing’s “Iron Wire Seal Script.”

On the rock face in the middle of the waterfall, there are stone steps from the Ming Dynasty used for mountain climbing. As visitors ascend the steps, they look like arhats ascending to heaven, hence the name “Luohan Steps” (Arhat Steps). Halfway up Taohua Peak stands the Waterfall Viewing Pavilion, the best spot to view Renzi Waterfall. From the pavilion, one can see the waterfall gushing forth from a single source, splitting into two streams that slant downward, strikingly resembling a bold and powerful “人” character painted by a calligrapher.

The best time to view Renzi Waterfall is during or right after rainfall; it is hard to see in prolonged dry weather. In 1965, a visitor wrote a poem after visiting: “In sunshine, admire the peaks’ splendor; in rain, watch the twin cascades. With Huangshan before me, both sunny and rainy views delight the eye.” Stone steps carved into the bedrock of the waterfall are called “Luohan Steps,” which were used by ancient climbers. The Waterfall Viewing Pavilion halfway up Taohua Peak offers the finest vantage point to see Renzi Waterfall.
