Huangdi Source
Huangdi Source is the legendary dwelling place of Xuanyuan Huangdi, the ancestor of the Chinese nation, and the birthplace of Huangshan, a UNESCO World Natural and Cultural Heritage site. The scenic area stretches through the seldom-visited sea of clouds beneath Xuanyuan Peak and Bright Summit of Huangshan. Here, verdant mountains embrace the land, ancient trees tower above, graceful bamboo sways in the breeze, streams murmur gently, valleys hide strange grottoes, and historic sites abound, all contributing to an air of mystery. A place where dragons and tigers are said to dwell, and immortal islands are touched by the wind. The area features wondrous caves, deep valleys, peculiar pools, and ancient lakes, bringing to life the stories recorded in the *Zhou Shu Yi Ji · Immortal Biographies*, the *Huangshan Map Classic*, and *Records of the Grand Historian* about Huangdi and Huangdi Source.
The site is rich in magical legends that serve as a living textbook of Chinese culture. Holy temples, ancient bridges, post roads, and academies can be found throughout, bearing the footprints of countless historical figures and literati. It is a feng shui treasure that embodies both imperial sanctity and natural wonder—a long-lost wonder rediscovered after more than a thousand years.
Attractions
Currently, the Huangshan District has identified several accessible scenic areas: the Tiantai-Dinghu Scenic Area, the Zizhiyuan Grand Canyon Scenic Area, the Karst Cave Cluster Scenic Area, and the Ancient Cultural Relics Cluster. There are dozens of major attractions. Among them: the Tiantai Ancient Hermitage Site (known for its sacred spring and as the location where the first statue of Huangdi lying down was discovered); Dinghu (believed to be where Huangdi cast tripods and refined elixirs, as well as the sacred site where he ascended to heaven on a dragon); Shixian Chamber (said to be where Huangdi rested, as depicted in the *Huangshan Map Classic*); the Magical Grand Canyon (which illustrates nearly all the wondrous tales recorded in the *Huangshan Map Classic* about Huangdi gathering purple lingzhi mushrooms, refining elixirs, bathing, and ascending to heaven on a dragon); the Huanggu Hermitage Ruins and the newly discovered self-made tomb and tombstone (speculated to be the retreat place of Li Zicheng); the Huangdi Source Karst Cave Cluster (located on the eastern foothills of Xuanyuan Peak, where over ten interconnected caves—both over and under 100 meters in length—have been preliminarily discovered, which is extremely rare, and many divine palaces within the caves remain unexplored); a 1,500-year-old cypress tree (said to be the site of the ancient Xuanyuan Temple); a well-preserved Tang Dynasty stone arch bridge (Lüliu Bridge); the former residence of Li Bai when he visited Huangshan (the site of Taibai Study, where Li Bai wrote the famous poem *To Hu Gonghui of Huangshan Requesting a White Pheasant*); and ancient post roads (leading close to the Huanggu Hermitage and the self-made tomb), among others, which are especially mystical. Boasting the “New Four Wonders of Huangshan”—Mystic Valley, Colorful Pools, Magical Caves, and Historic Sites—Huangdi Source is the origin of Huangshan culture and another marvel of Huangshan’s cultural and natural heritage. While the Huangshan Scenic Area captivates with its mountain wonders, Huangdi Source enchants with its “undersea” mystique. These are two extraordinary gems of Huangshan. To truly understand the essence of Huangshan, one must explore Huangdi Source.
