Qiaoshan Shenxian Cave
Qiaoshan Shenxian Cave is located by the scenic Taiping Lake in Qiaoshan, Xinming — the hometown of "Gongfei" (tribute Torreya grandis). According to the "Dictionary of Scenic Spots in China": "As visitors step into the cave, mist curls around them, giving rise to illusions that transport them into a fairyland, hence the name Shenxian (Immortal) Cave." It is a comprehensive scenic area primarily featuring karst cave landscapes, along with the natural scenery and cultural attractions outside the cave. The area is hailed as the "No. 1 Cave of Jianghuai" not only because of the numerous magical underground formations within the cave that surpass many other caves in China, but also due to the stunning natural scenery and rich cultural heritage found outside the cave.
Among them, Qiaoshan Shenxian Cave is the only naturally formed limestone cave in the Huangshan area. It has two entrances to the north and south, with a total length of 3,000 meters, of which about 1,500 meters have been developed so far. The overall layout follows an "S" shape. The cave is divided into upper, middle, and lower levels, with caves within caves, rivers inside the caverns, and varying elevations and widths. The streams twist and turn through multiple layers, with interconnected passages forming a maze-like labyrinth. There are also mountains, water features, grand halls, corridors, pools, and cascading streams — truly a place where "every step offers a unique view and every moment leads to a wondrous scene."
The cave’s attractions are named based on their shapes and are characterized by their seclusion, wonder, divinity, fantasy, and mystery. "Seclusion" refers to the serene and beautiful natural surroundings outside the cave, such as the thousand-acre "Fragrant Torreya Forest" and the sea of clouds, which are soothing to the soul. "Wonder" describes the abundant, uniquely shaped, and vividly lifelike stalactites and stalagmites in the cave — some reminiscent of the scenic beauty of Huangshan or the fairyland of Penglai, others resembling the legendary immortals. Both ancient and modern visitors have marveled at the "mysterious, illusion-inducing, fairyland-like" scenes. "Divinity" refers to the realistic formations and numerous myths and legends that transport visitors into a mystical realm, while also inspiring awe at nature’s incredible craftsmanship. "Fantasy" stems from the sounds of splashing water, like music, creating a misty ambiance that conjures visions of a legendary fairyland. "Mystery" arises from the ancient geological formation of the cave. Based on certain findings and nearby dinosaur eggs, some speculate that the cave may date back to the Jurassic or Cretaceous periods of the Mesozoic era — even leading scholars to suggest the possible existence of dinosaur or dinosaur egg fossils in and around the cave. However, this remains to be confirmed, attracting numerous researchers and geology enthusiasts eager to uncover its secrets.
Natural Scenery Outside the Cave
The natural scenery outside the cave consists of the thousand-acre tribute Torreya forest, millennium-old Torreya king trees, Monkey Chief tea plantations, as well as mist-covered peaks and sea of clouds. The breathtaking views and fresh air provide not only a refreshing experience but also a natural oxygen bar that promotes health and wellness, making it a place that many visitors find hard to leave.
Cultural Attractions
The scenic area is located in Qiaoshan Village, which is not only a production site for tribute Torreya but also one of the birthplaces of the world-renowned tea — "National Gift Tea" Taiping Houkui. The harvesting and processing of both Torreya and Houkui tea involve complex yet fascinating procedures. Participating in these activities alongside local villagers has become a highlight for many tourists visiting the area.
Qiaoshan Village: Located in the northeastern part of Xinming Township, Qiaoshan Village is 15 kilometers from the township government. The terrain is higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest. Nestled among high mountains, it borders Jing County to the east and neighbors Xinming Village, Sanhe Village to the south, west, and north respectively, with an average elevation of over 500 meters. In 2008, Qiaoshan Village merged with the former Shuguang Village during a village-level administrative adjustment.
The village’s unique geographical location, climate, and soil structure have given rise to its distinctive local resources. Qiaoshan Village comprises 13 villager groups with a population of 1,268. The area boasts attractions deemed as "fairyland on earth," such as Qiaoshan Shenxian Cave and Taiping Lake Shuguang... More detailed information about Qiaoshan Village ++
