The cliff inscriptions of Huangshan are a radiant gem in the cultural and artistic treasury of Mount Huang, infusing its majestic, perilous, and exquisite landscapes with an even deeper sense of wonder. To promote the profound culture of Huangshan and preserve its unique and unparalleled treasures, the garden management authorities of the Huangshan Scenic Area have conducted a comprehensive survey of all cliff inscriptions across the mountain, touched them up with fresh paint, and compiled them into a collection.

The cliff inscriptions of Huangshan vary from single characters to a few, or even dozens or hundreds of words; they include poems of praise, expressions of emotion, or travel records... Each one embodies the profound wisdom and spontaneous inspiration of their creators, encapsulating the sages’ deep understanding and concise summation of what makes Huangshan beautiful—offering visitors moments of sudden enlightenment. Among the many inscriptions on Huangshan, Zou Lu contributed the most, with over 200 characters, all written with meticulous care—each stroke upright and square, a model of regular script. Tang Shizun, a military man by background, wrote in bold running script; his work “Standing Instantly Above the East Sea, Ascending High to Gaze at Peace” on the wall of Qingluan Peak flows like a dragon’s or snake’s pen strokes, full of twists and surges, exuding unstoppable momentum. By the Green Lion Rock near the Guest-Greeting Pine stands an ancient and rustic Han-style clerical script reading “Peaks Soaring to the Skies,” penned by Zheng Gukou, a master calligrapher from the late Ming and early Qing period who specialized in the “Cao Quan Stele”—his work is both archaic and vigorous... With a gathering of distinguished figures and masters, and an abundance of brilliant brushwork, the inscriptions are too numerous to list.

Protection Scope: 10 meters around individual inscriptions; 20 meters around clusters or concentrated areas with three or more inscriptions.

Construction Control Zone: 20 meters around individual inscriptions; 40 meters around clusters or concentrated areas with three or more inscriptions.
