Waterfall View Tower and Tide-Listening Residence

Waterfall View Tower and Tide-Listening Residence are cultural heritage sites protected at the provincial level in Anhui Province and serve as patriotic education bases.

Waterfall View Tower and Tide-Listening Residence are located in the Huangshan Scenic Area of Huangshan City.

The construction of these buildings began in the late Han Dynasty when Chen Ye, the Prefect of Kuaiji, secluded himself in Huangshan. By the 34th year of the Wanli reign during the Ming Dynasty (1606), after Monk Pumen entered the mountain, the number of temples, pavilions, and towers gradually increased. However, over time and through the vicissitudes of history, most of these ancient structures have been lost to decay and ruin, with only a few relics such as the Ciguang Pavilion remaining. The well-preserved, long-standing buildings today were mostly built during the Republican era, primarily serving the functions of sightseeing and providing accommodation and meals. Among them, the Waterfall View Tower and Tide-Listening Residence, along with the White Dragon Bridge in the Hot Spring Scenic Area, are the most representative structures from that period. Moreover, these buildings also bear witness to the historical evolution of Huangshan and even China due to their humanistic significance. For instance, Deng Xiaoping delivered a speech advocating reform and opening-up atop the Waterfall View Tower, propelling Huangshan toward a new era. Meanwhile, in Zhengdao Residence (now known as the Tide-Listening Residence), Zhang Xueliang reflected unregretfully on the Xi’an Incident, embodying the trials of humanity’s righteous path. These two historic sites have now become part of Huangshan’s “Patriotic Education Base.”
