Linfeng Bridge

Linfeng Bridge is a cultural relic protection unit of Anhui Province.

Spanning the Machuan River, it is a five-arch stone bridge, with a length of 91.6 meters, a width of 7.1 meters, and a height of 12 meters. On the south side of the bridge there is a stone pagoda, and a coin pattern is carved on the ground. Linfeng Bridge was first built in the 27th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1762) and completed in the 33rd year of Qianlong (1768), and was repaired once in the 5th year of the Guangxu reign (1879). The bridge is a single-curved stone arch structure, entirely built with blue hemp stones, featuring six piers and five arches. It is 91.9 meters long, 7.65 meters wide, and 12 meters high. The whole bridge has 34 pairs of stone pillars, with two pairs of drum-shaped stones at both ends, and inscribed stone tablets on the stone railings on both sides of the middle section. On the left side of the south end of the bridge stands a stone pagoda, and next to it on the ground is a coin-pattern carved on a bluestone slab. The stone carvings at Banshitán date from the Ming Dynasty to the Republican period, consisting of five stone inscribed poems and one stone-carved Buddha statue, covering an area of 220 square meters.

I. Historical Background

The Machuan River, originating from Huangshan, flows through Xianyuan Town. The village by the river was named “Shuidong” (literally “east of the water”) because it lies east of the river. Located in the eastern outskirts of the ancient town of Xianyuan, the name “Shuidong” has been used to this day. The village consists of nine villager groups: Xucun, Xukan, Hongmiao, Xiangcun, Sun Village, Zaofang, Sangent, Shiqiao, and Yaotan.
