Zhongjiashan Site

Zhongjiashan Site is a cultural heritage site protected at the municipal level in Huangshan City.

The Zhongjiashan Neolithic Site is a late Neolithic to Shang and Zhou period archaeological site. It is located in Taipinghu Town, 25 kilometers west of Huangshan District, beside the Tong-Huang Highway (from Tongling to Huangshan). The site covers an area of over 10,000 square meters. It is named after Zhongjiashan, a high slope on the Zhongjiashan mountain range. In 1970, the Chen Village Hydropower Station was completed and began storing water, submerging most of the site. During the dry season when water levels recede, parts of the site can still emerge above water, with numerous stone tools and pottery artifacts visible on the ground.

This site was discovered in 1993. The district’s cultural authorities conducted multiple field investigations, collecting a large number of specimens, including over 30 processed stone tools such as axes, knives, shovels, adzes, and net sinkers; more than 10 intact pottery and primitive celadon vessels such as beans, zun, pots, and spinning whorls; as well as over a hundred fragments of red and gray patterned pottery. Most of the pottery fragments are gray, followed by red, and they come in two types: sand-tempered and hard pottery. The identifiable main shapes include tripods, jars, bowls, zun, beans, and bowls; the decorative patterns on the pottery mainly consist of grid patterns, mat patterns, rice-character patterns, meander patterns, circle patterns, wave patterns, zigzag patterns, and string patterns. Based on the collected samples, the stone knives are mostly double-handled, similar to those unearthed at the Jiangjiashan and Longwangjing sites in the region but more crudely made; the net sinkers vary in size, with larger ones typically measuring 5 cm in length and 1.5 cm in width, all made from local pebbles. Double-handled stone knives and large net sinkers are rare among ancient sites in southern Anhui. Therefore, this site holds significant importance for the study of ancient cultures in southern Anhui.

Zhongjiashan Site has been designated as a municipal-level cultural heritage protection site in Huangshan City.

It is 30 kilometers from Huangshan, 55 kilometers from Jiuhuashan, and is traversed by Provincial Highway S103. It is a shining pearl on the golden tourist route of “Hangzhou – Qiandao Lake – Huangshan – Taipinghu – Jiuhuashan – Hefei.”
