Huangtuling Dinosaur Egg Fossil Site

The Huangtuling Dinosaur Egg Fossil Site is a cultural relic protection unit of Huangshan City.

The Huangtuling Dinosaur Egg Fossil Site is located in Taipinghu Town, Huangshan District, approximately 40 kilometers west of Huangshan District’s urban area in Guangyang Township, Huangtuling. The site lies adjacent to Taiping Lake to the south. It was discovered in early 1995 during the construction of the Tongling–Huangshan Highway (Tongguan to Huangshan) at the Huangtuling section. Nearly 100 square meters of fossilized dinosaur eggs were unearthed. The dinosaur egg fossils, excavated on-site by provincial archaeological professionals and identified by national paleontological experts, date back 75 million years and belong to the hadrosaurid group of dinosaurs. The unearthed eggs came in two shapes: oblate and oval. The oblate ones measured 10–12 cm in diameter, while the oval ones were 18 cm long and 6–7 cm in diameter. According to road construction workers, a total of 5–6 nests containing dozens of eggs were found, most of which were destroyed, with only over 20 pieces collected by the provincial and district authorities. This discovery marked the first time dinosaur egg fossils had been found in our province, thus it was listed as one of Anhui Province’s major archaeological discoveries in 1995. The unearthing of the Huangtuling Dinosaur Egg Fossils provides extremely rare physical material for scientific research on the ancient climate, paleontology, geology, and hydrology of southern Anhui.

The Huangtuling Dinosaur Egg Fossil Site has been designated as a cultural relic protection unit of Huangshan City.
