Gantang Xunfeng Pagoda

Gantang Xunfeng Pagoda is a cultural relics protection unit of Huangshan City.

Gantang Xunfeng Pagoda is located in Gantang Town, Huangshan District, dating back to the Qing Dynasty.

Also known as Wenfeng Pagoda, Xunfeng Pagoda is located on Gu Mountain in the urban area of Gantang Town, Huangshan District (west of the former Huangshan District Government Guesthouse). It is now a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit.

Built in the 10th year of the Shunzhi reign of the Qing Dynasty (1653), Xunfeng Pagoda is a three-story hexagonal pavilion-style brick pagoda. It stands 10.5 meters tall with a base diameter of 3.7 meters. The first floor has a door, the second floor has five windows, and the third floor features three long windows. Originally, the interior had floorboards and stairs, but these no longer exist. The first and second floors have eaves adorned with parallel lotus patterns, while the third floor features slightly arched lotus-patterned eaves. The top of the pagoda is damaged, with overgrown weeds. On the wall of the second floor inside the entrance, there is a small square niche inscribed with “Shide Hall” and “Repaired in the 18th Year of the Daoguang Reign, August.”

A Seven-Pine Study House was originally built next to Xunfeng Pagoda but was demolished during the Republican era. “The shadow of the pagoda and the sound of the pines, serene and detached from worldly bustle,” was one of the original Twelve Scenic Spots of the Cui Family in Gantang. Today, the study house is gone, but the pagoda remains, though its spire has been destroyed by lightning.

In April 2011, Huangshan City carried out a comprehensive restoration of Xunfeng Pagoda, including realigning the body of the pagoda, repairing cracks and damaged sections, maintaining the top and skirt of the pagoda, installing lightning protection facilities, and improving the surrounding environment. During construction, traditional materials were used as much as possible, and the joints of the walls and the tiles on the pagoda top were sealed with a traditional adhesive made from lime, clay, and glutinous rice paste mixed in proportion.
