Cicheng Fengyu Residence

The Feng Residence is a national key cultural relics protection unit, located on Taiyangdian Road in Cicheng. Built in the late Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, it was once the residence of descendants of Feng Shuji, the Governor-General of Huguang. The current structure consists of an entrance gate, rear wing, screen wall, second gate, main hall, and side rooms. The main gate has a depth of two bays and features a decorative gable wall in a fanned shape; the second gate is built of brick in the form of a memorial archway. The main hall has three bays with two side passages, flanked by side chambers, and each of the left and right side rooms has two bays. The two gate towers and the screen wall are adorned with brick carvings featuring figures, flowers, and plants. The carvings are exquisitely crafted with smooth lines, representing the finest examples of Qianlong-era decorative art.

The Yu Residence is a municipal-level cultural relics protection unit, located at the eastern end of Taiyangdian Road in Cicheng. Originally part of the former residence of Feng Shuji, the Governor-General of Huguang during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, it was later sold to the Yu family. The existing structure is an early Qing Dynasty building, covering a total area of over 6,700 square meters. It is one of the largest and best-preserved ancient architectural complexes in Ningbo, reflecting the architectural style of early Qing Dynasty Jiangnan.

The Fengyue Colored Painted Gate is the entrance gate of the former residence of Feng Yue, the Minister of Justice during the Ming Dynasty. It was built in 1610 by decree of Emperor Shenzong of the Ming Dynasty. The main structure is adorned with vivid and colorful patterns, giving it an antique charm and majestic presence. It is the best-preserved example of colored painting and carving on Ming Dynasty gate towers in eastern Zhejiang. In 2006, it was listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit, and in 2009, it received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation.

The “Art of Motherhood” exhibition at the Fengyu Residence features six themed art galleries—the Hanxing “Mother’s Paper-cutting Gallery,” Chen Caoqian’s “Chinese Women’s Arts Gallery,” Chen Xia’s “Chinese Knots Gallery,” Nian Bihua’s “Chinese Embroidery Gallery,” Wu Yuanxin’s “Blue Printed Cloth Gallery,” and the “Textile Gallery.” These themed galleries showcase exquisite works by top-tier Chinese artists from around the world, where visitors can try their hands at crafting intricate Chinese knots and paper-cutting.
