Former Residence of Ying Xiuren

The former residence of Ying Xiuren is a cultural relic protection unit of Jiangbei District.

Ying Xiuren (1900–1933) took part in the anti-imperialist and anti-feudal May Fourth Movement in 1919. In his early years, he joined the League of Left-Wing Writers of China and was one of the pioneers of modern Chinese poetry as well as a renowned member of the “Lake Poets.” He joined the Communist Party of China in 1925 and was sent by the Party in 1926 to work at the Whampoa Military Academy in Guangzhou, later being assigned to work at the Labor Department of the Wuhan National Government. After the failure of the First Great Revolution, Ying was sent by the Party to study in the Soviet Union. He returned to China in 1930 and worked in Shanghai for the Central Military Commission of the CPC, the Central Organization Department, and the Propaganda Department of the Jiangsu Provincial Committee of the CPC. On May 14, 1933, he heroically resisted arrest during underground work in Shanghai and died a martyr’s death at the age of 33.

The former residence of Ying Xiuren is a three-room, one-alley building facing south. It has a front courtyard enclosed by walls on three sides, forming an independent yard where Ying lived from birth until leaving home at the age of 14.
