The Baoguo Temple Ancient Architecture Museum is a specialized museum based on the first batch of Major National Historical and Cultural Sites—the Baoguo Temple Ancient Architectural Complex. It focuses on the protection, research, exhibition, and promotion of the history, culture, and craftsmanship of regional ancient architecture. The museum spans over 17,600 square meters in land area, with a building area exceeding 7,000 square meters, including approximately 3,500 square meters of exhibition space. It consists of architectural complexes formed by individual structures from the Song, Ming, Qing, and Republican periods. The main sections include the Preface Hall, the Authentic Northern Song Dynasty Main Hall, the Millennium Timber Structure Xiangfu Hall, and Xiangfu Hall and the Yingzao Fashi (Treatise on Architectural Methods).

The museum’s basic historical exhibition system, “The First Mountain to the East,” centers on the essence of the ancient architectural complex and an outstanding representative of China’s Tang and Song wooden structures—the Baoguo Temple Main Hall. It integrates ancient architectural relics, supported by historical documents, architectural components, and research findings. The exhibition explores aspects such as the heritage’s surrounding environment, overall layout, confirmed construction period, architectural characteristics, post-establishment national protection efforts, and its connection to the most important surviving ancient official Chinese architectural code—the Song Dynasty Yingzao Fashi. Through the use of physical objects, models, murals, images, restored scenes, and modern display techniques such as sound, light, and electricity, the museum comprehensively interprets the rich historical, artistic, and scientific information contained within this cultural heritage site—an outstanding example of the most advanced wooden architectural technology in China around the early 11th century. This further illustrates the developmental trajectory and scientific philosophy of China’s mainstream official wooden architectural system.

In December 2005, the Baoguo Temple Ancient Architecture became a teaching and research base for the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University. This followed the establishment of an off-campus internship base by the School of Architecture at Ningbo University in 2004, marking another fixed and long-term collaborative mechanism with a key domestic higher education institution. This fully demonstrates the irreplaceable status and scientific value of Baoguo Temple in the history of ancient Chinese architecture. It has also drawn greater attention from domestic and international academic circles toward the Baoguo Temple Ancient Architectural Complex, promoting effective heritage preservation and rational utilization.
